In this ISTQB® advanced training course, everything is about the tasks of a test automation engineer (TAE) - from the conception, development and implementation to maintenance of test automation solutions. You will learn the concepts, methods, tools and processes for automating dynamic functional tests and their relationship to test management, configuration management, defect management, software development processes and quality assurance. We explain how you can apply the methods described using different software lifecycle approaches (e.g. agile, sequential, incremental, iterative) and types of software systems (e.g. embedded, distributed, mobile) as well as test types (functional and non-functional tests).

The course imparts the curriculum contents of the ISTQB® in 3 days. After the training, you can competently integrate test automation into test processes and select suitable tools for the respective tasks. We make sure you can develop a test automation strategy (TAS), build a test automation architecture (TAA), and review and optimize your test automation frameworks (TAF). You will learn how to turn manual tests into automated tests and how to generate and analyze automated reports and metrics. The course is accompanied by repetitions on the terminology of testing and the test fundamentals.

In this training course we teach the contents of the official curriculum of the ISTQB®. In addition, our trainers will introduce you to as many practical examples as possible so that you will be able to easily apply what you have learned later on.

After the course you are able to:

  • Explain the objectives, advantages, disadvantages, and limitations of test automation.
  • Identify technical success factors of a test automation project.
  • Analyze a system under test to determine the appropriate automation solution.
  • Analyze test automation tools for a given project and report technical findings and recommendations.
  • Understand "design for testability" and "design for test automation" methods applicable to the SUT.
  • Explain the structure of the Generic Test Automation Architecture.
  • Analyze factors of implementation, use, and maintenance requirements for a given Test Automation Solution.
  • Explain the factors to be considered when identifying reusability of components.
  • Apply guidelines that support effective test tool pilot and deployment activities.
  • Analyze deployment risks and identify technical issues that could lead to failure of the test automation project, and plan mitigation strategies.
  • Understand which factors support and affect maintainability.
  • Classify metrics that can be used to monitor the test automation strategy and effectiveness.
  • Explain how a test execution report is constructed and published.
  • Apply criteria for determining the suitability of tests for automation.
  • Understand the factors in transitioning from manual to automation testing.
  • Explain the factors to consider in implementing automated regression testing, new feature testing, and confirmation testing.
  • Verify the correctness of an automated test environment including test tool setup.
  • Verify the correct behaviour for a given automated test script and/or test suite.
  • Analyze the technical aspects of a deployed test automation solution and provide recommendations for improvement.

target group

The course "ISTQB® Certified Tester Advanced Level - Test Automation Engineer" (CTAL-TAE) is based on the basic course (CTFL) and is aimed at advanced participants who already have several years of practical experience. The course is suitable for both specializing in test automation as well as gaining deeper insights into the design, development and maintenance of automated tests to support business or project decisions regarding test automation. This will be of particular benefit to:

prerequisites

Sound knowledge of software testing and practical experience in IT projects are a prerequisite for your participation in this training to ensure a deeper understanding of the contents. To obtain certification as an "ISTQB® Certified Tester Advanced Level - Test Automation Engineer", the basic certificate "ISTQB® Certified Tester Foundation Level" must be provided in addition to the successful final examination.

exam & certification

Your participation in the exam is optional. We assume that you will also take the exam after the training. Please let us know at the time of booking your course if you do not wish to do so.

The exam lasts 90 minutes and takes place in English language on the last training day directly after the exam. Non-native speakers can apply for a 25% time extension, the exam then lasts 113 minutes. We organize your participation for you. The independent certification body charges a fee of 260.00 Euro plus VAT, which we will charge you together with the training fees.

Our trainers offer you the best possible preparation for the "ISTQB® Certified Tester Advanced Level - Test Automation Engineer" exam. Our general ISTQB exam pass rates have been above average for years, so we strive to have those high rates for the scheme for Test Automation as well.

To gain this certification, candidates must hold the Certified Tester Foundation Level certificate.
